How to Pack For a Move

Before you make your moving guide or checklist, here are a few easy moving packing tips to serve as inspiration for your checklist and help you get ready to move

Learn How to Pack A TV

Packing a television, large electronics, and expensive artwork can be tricky. They require steady and strong hands and a lot of cushioning. If you don’t have the original box, wrap your TV in blankets or double-box it to keep it safe.

Or, if you need additional help with your TV or expensive artwork, you can always talk to your moving company about their special moving services to help you out.

Use The Right-Sized Boxes

Make sure you are using the right-sized boxes for all of your items. Do not pack too many heavy items into a large box, otherwise it may be difficult to carry. On the other hand, be sure to pack your fragile items into small boxes so they don’t jostle around too much and risk damage. The right sized box can help make your entire move easier.

Pack Room-by-Room

Keep your rooms separate as much as possible. This process will make packing and unpacking a lot faster. Plus, if you mix items from different rooms, you might accidentally lose track of where something is. Clearly label all of your boxes and try to keep them specific to each room.

Creating a Moving Checklist

One of the best moving packing tips for anyone who is planning for a shift in their life is to create a moving guide. A moving guide or checklist is filled with items or tasks that you should remember to do as a part of your packing process. Always make a checklist before you start packing. You can even do a checklist for each room in your house to make sure you are extra thorough. Here are some things you can add to your packing guide as you plan to move:

Bedroom

Some items that you could add to your bedroom checklist are:

      1. Pack away your extra bedsheets and pillows into trash bags so they don’t collect dust.

      1. Keep valuable possessions in a small box that you can carry with you for safety.

      1. Put loose and non-fragile items into suitcases

      1. Protect your mattresses and any other furniture with spare sheets and blankets.

    Living Room

A few ideas for your living room checklist might be:

        1. Remove all of your lightbulbs from lamps and other lights, and pack them separately.

        1. Cover any mirrors or large framed photos with an X shape made out of packing tape. Then wrap them in blankets to keep them safe.

        1. Repack any electronics into their original boxes, if you still have them. If not, be sure to use bubble wrap or other cushioning when you pack them away.

      Bathroom

Packing your bathroom is a slightly different matter when it comes to your checklist. Here are a few things you might include:

          1. Pack up everything that you can, but make sure you keep your necessities easily accessible (don’t pack your toothbrush until moving day, for example).

          1. Make sure all of your toiletries are closed and will not leak. Pack things into a large plastic bag if there is a fear of leakage.

          1. Pack your medications separately and make sure the container is labeled.

What Comes First in Your Moving Guide

So then the question becomes, what are the first things you should pack when you get ready for a move? Here are some moving packing tips for how you can get started.

        Out-of-Season Clothes

One of the first things to get out of the way is your out-of-season clothing, or anything you know will not be worn before the moving date. While you obviously don’t want to pack up all of your clothes right away, it can be very helpful to get some of them into boxes as soon as possible. This way, you can clear up a lot of open space in your bedroom to pack more boxes or get a better sense of what else needs to be packed away early.

        Ornaments

When you are working through your moving checklist, your conversation pieces, ornaments, and other decorations should be towards the top. Decorative items like vases, photos, and candles can all be packed away fairly easily. Plus, these items are often the ones that are resting on top of your larger furniture pieces like desks, tables, and dressers. These ornamental pieces need to be cleared out first in order to properly pack up your larger items.

        Non-Essentials

The other, broader category of items that you should pack early are all of your non-essentials. You will probably find non-essentials in every room of your house. This could be any large kitchen appliances that you don’t use every day, books that you are not currently reading, or even your bedside lamps. You may not realize it right away, but your non-essential items add up. When you are working through how to pack for a move, try not to save more than you need until the last minute.
